Thursday 15 July 2010< | Keith J. Hamilton

Banner Main v1 Designer of the Month – Introducing Insignia001!

Designer Name: Insignia001

Real Name: Luis Enrique Martinez

Projects Won: 22

MycroBurst.com has always had the services of talented designers. Coming from virtually every corner of the world, some of the top logo designers today have used MycroBurst.com as a platform to hone their skills and prove their expertise to the world. Continuing with our appreciation for the exceptional work our designers bring forth to our clients, we conducted another interview of a participant who has quickly made a name for himself in a very short period of time.

Luis Martinez, more commonly known as Insignia001, comes from a new generation of talented young designers. He has quickly cemented his place in the logo design industry through hard work and dedication. An active participant on MycroBurst.com, Luis now has 22 contest wins under his belt and is one of the most consistent performers on the site. We sat down with him to ask him about a few questions about his thought process, his passion for designing logos and what it takes to be a good designer.

post logo 1 Designer of the Month – Introducing Insignia001!

Q1: How did you get into designing logos?

A: I started to design some drafts for my school work, during college. I learned some design skills by myself and after one year of learning and school work, I discovered my love for logo designing. I really enjoy it and I find it a great way to express my creativity.

Q2: How did you come across MycroBurst.com?

A: It was luck actually. One day while learning tutorials about Adobe Illustrator, I found a link that took me to MycroBurst.com. I believe my love for designing brought me here.

Q3: Describe your work process? How do you go about creating such beautiful logos?

A: I start out by imagining concepts and thinking shapes in order to understand what each project needs. Then I start drawing my ideas to develop a concept that fulfills what the contest holder communicates in his brief. I try to be original in my work. I always give my very best to every project I undertake.

Q4: You have won 22 design contests now. What is the secret behind your success?

My secret is that I always give my best. I get involved in the project and try to understand what the client needs. I get creative by letting my imagination flow and having lots of fun.

Q5: How do you deal with the competing with other fellow Designers? Surely it must be intimidating at times? icon smile Designer of the Month – Introducing Insignia001!

A: Of course! There are a lot of great designers out there. I’m still learning and want to keep learning from the best. I read a lot about talented designers from around the world. I participate by respecting each designer and his/her work. I’ve seen amazing designs over here. They motivate me to improve my work every day.

Q6: How do you go about choosing the projects? Is there any particular criteria that you follow?

A: Each project is a challenge, not only in a competitive way but also a challenge for my creativity. I try to compete in every project to prove to myself that I can develop any kind of design.

Q7: Name three things/attributes that every designer should have or try to incorporate.

A: Creativity, Originality and Hard work.

Q8: Name three things that designers should always be vary of or should not do.

A: The things to avoid are rip-offs, copying in general and trying to make a design in less than an hour. That’s miserable. A logo must be unique. By copying a logo, it loses its magic. A designer needs to work on details. It makes a design more attractive to anyone who sees it. Hard work makes all the difference.

Q9: What do you love most about being a designer?

A: I love being able to express myself and create what my imagination can develop. It’s a proud feeling when my work gets chosen and becomes the image for companies around the world.

Q10: Lastly describe your overall experience about being a designer at MycroBurst.com?

A: Well, I’m a beginner designer in general terms. I’ve been designing for almost a year and a half. When I first found out about MycroBurst.com, I started to develop ideas for logo contest there. Winning my first contest was a great experience. MycroBurst.com has helped me to improve my design skills. Each contest won or not, has taught me something new.

7 Deadly Sins of an Online Design Contest

Thursday 8 July 2010< | Keith J. Hamilton

contests banner v1 7 Deadly Sins of an Online Design Contest

Online logo design contests are all the rage these days, both among participants who live to prove their talents and among businesses who strive to seek a much needed identity. A lot has been said about these contests as of late. While businesses around the world have showed their support and have graciously rallied behind the concept, some individual critics remain who question its very integrity and purpose and have started an all out war against this “vice” as they have termed it.

Here we will try to put ourselves in these critic’s shoes and analyze their reasons or “deadly sins” if you would, for being so against the online design contests.

1. Low Prize Amount for a Good Design

This is a fair complaint voiced equally by the participants as well as critics. The prize money allocated by some contest holders is often times not congruent with the amount of work they demand from the designers. This trend however, is now changing. Companies are realizing the potential of online logo design contests and are now coming forth with more competitive prize amounts in order to attract more talented designers.

2. Poor Quality of Design

Critics have been beating this drum since the very inception of online design contests arguing that the quality of work will not be up to standard. I’d urge them to take another look at the winning logo designs. There is a reason why online design contests are so popular and the quality of work makes this quite apparent.

3. Lack of Qualified Participants

People participating in logo design contests haven’t been spared either, as skeptics have directly attacked their abilities, citing lack of skill and knowledge about the subject at hand. This argument carries no weight whatsoever. The pool of participants today comprises of experts from around the world who come forth with their knowledge and experience to participate.

4. Undermining the ‘Real Designers’

This is a painful pill to swallow for the critics who are mostly designers by profession themselves. Online design contests have opened doors for numerous designers willing to work for cheaper pay. This does not bode well for the ‘real designers’ who have made careers out of designing logos. What they need to realize is that these contests are not here to complete with them per say. They exist solely as a means to provide businesses with better alternative to seek a company identity on a modest budget.

5. End Up Costing More to Companies

Again a shot at participants by making the businesses doubt design contests. Sometimes companies are simply not satisfied with the final draft which leads to time wasted and money lost.  However, this usually happens when contest holders are not very forth coming about the details of the assignment. Clients now have started providing in depth briefs with all the dos and don’ts and that has essentially rectified this issue.

6. You Get What You Paid For

When nothing else works, you will see this tag line being thrown around a lot. Since the prize money is so low, there is always a concern that the end result may not meet expectations. Again, this has been proved wrong by the hard work and dedication of the participants.

7. There are Better Options for Getting a Design

There are other options. Sure. Better ones? Not really. With the enormous amount of talent now available combined with a fast and efficient platform like the internet, online design contests are simply the best option for companies to getting good results fast and at an affordable price.

Honestly, this attitude of critics is more of an exercise of their right to disagree rather than anything else. These are hardly any reasons to start an all out war of words (as they put it), against this supposed vice. I guess sometimes a soldier just doesn’t know when to quit, even though he knows he has lost the war.

In our previous posts, we covered various aspects of social networking. We talked about the important social media websites that small businesses are capitalizing on in order to gain exposure and visibility in their respective fields. We also went over the significance of social bookmarking and how small businesses can and are incorporating it in their infrastructure to gain their fair share in today’s competitive marketplace. In this segment, we will conclude the series on social networking and focus on its third and final niche – Yellow Pages Websites.

Yellow Pages websites are an indispensible tool for locating and connecting with businesses and people. They also offer a great mode for learning about business products. Below we will discuss a few popular and useful Yellow Pages websites which small businesses must incorporate in their marketing strategy.

1. Foursquare – Let the Neighborhood Know You are Here

logo1 5 Yellow Page Websites for Small Businesses – Get Connected! [Part 3] Foursquare is an amazing web and mobile application that small businesses can use to establish themselves within their local communities. It is essentially a business finder and a social city guide in one, along with a few nifty features making it a very interactive and informative website. Users can “check in” at a place of business and rate their services, products or the company. Points are awarded for checking in. The user with the most check-ins in the city is crowned mayor of that company. Foursquare currently has around 500,000 users internationally.
2. Yelp – Help Your Business With It
logo2 5 Yellow Page Websites for Small Businesses – Get Connected! [Part 3] Over 31 million people access Yelp every month ever since its inception in 2004, making it a very lucrative website for all small businesses. Yelp is ranked within the top 150 internet websites in the United States. Visitors can use its online search features to gather basic information about businesses. Each business has its own 5 point rating and reviews. Visitors can use this rating to get a good idea about the quality of their service.
3. Switchboard – Connect with Your Target Audience
logo3 5 Yellow Page Websites for Small Businesses – Get Connected! [Part 3] Switchboard.com provides a quick and efficient way for people and businesses to connect with their target audience. It was launched in 1996 and has since become the pioneer in online yellow pages. It was the first yellow page company to introduce interactive internet display ads. A unique feature about Switchboard is that it keeps a detailed record of consumers who are looking for specific products and are ready to buy. This information helps small businesses to establish and grow their presence on the web.
4. SuperPages – Connecting With the Right People
logo4 5 Yellow Page Websites for Small Businesses – Get Connected! [Part 3] One of the popular Yellow Pages websites, similar to Switchboard, in terms of services is SuperPages. Visitors can look up businesses information, find friends, browse cars and even examine detailed maps and get driving directions. SuperPages is unique in the sense that it offers consumers a Super Guarantee, helping them connect with the right business.

5. YellowPages – Innovative Searching via Cell Phone

logo5 5 Yellow Page Websites for Small Businesses – Get Connected! [Part 3] YellowPages is another viable website where consumers can look for local information and services. They have a huge database comprising of over 20 million local business listings and they perform over 150 million business searches every month. YP.com allows you to find and discover all kinds of local information. Whether you want to shop for a car or need information about a local event, this website gives you the convenience of enhanced search with local activity features. YellowPages also offers YPMobile service which enables you to get all their features of search on your cell phone.
With the breadth of services the Yellow Pages websites offer they should be included in the marketing plan of all small businesses. By actively participating on these websites and by keeping your company profile up-to-date, companies can successfully increase their market presence in their relevant industries.

Hope you enjoyed this social media series for small businesses.
