Depending on who you ask, every designer will have his own interpretation of what makes a graphic designer successful. Many associate success with money and fame. Others attribute it to being the experts of the design industry in terms of knowledge and experience.

No matter how you view success, all successful graphic designers exhibit some similar habits that put them on top of their game. Today’s post will highlight seven such habits that many designers regard as vital to their success.

1. Being Unique – Stand Out from the Crowd
It is important for successful graphic designers to stand out from the competition. Creating unique and professional designs concepts is the best way they can distinguish themselves from other designers. Of course, there is often some ego involved, but that is often what motivates top designers.

2. Desire to Learn – Knowledge is Power
The industry of graphic design is in a continuous state of evolution, with new tools and technologies emerging every week. Successful designers always stay updated on all developments taking place in the design arena. It enables them keep their skills razor sharp.

3. Procrastination – Not Allowed!
Procrastination is one mistake graphic designers cannot afford to make if he or she wants to establish him or herself as a professional in the field. Successful graphic designers never end up behind the eight ball. They keep their progress in check and don’t put things off for tomorrow.

4. Client Interaction – Keeping Them in the Loop
Prompt client interaction is critical to a project’s success. Keeping clients in the loop ensures that the end result is meets their specifications. It is also a great way to strengthen designer-client relationships.

5. Passionate Attitude – Don’t Design to Live, Live to Design!
Passion is the quintessential element that all successful graphic designers possess. It is the driving force behind their creativity and compels them to take their imagination to higher levels in order to create breathtaking design concepts.

6. Handling Criticism – They Make It Because They Can Take It
Successful graphic designers understand that criticism comes with the job and should never be taken negatively, or worse, personally. They see constructive criticism as an opportunity to deliver improved results.

7. Professionalism – Knowing the Fine Line between Confidence and Arrogance
“I can do it.” That’s confidence.
“Only I can do it.” That’s arrogance. This attitude should be checked at the door.

Good designers have a clear understanding of the two and the fine line that separates them.

Great graphic designers are not born. They are made. Good design habits play an instrumental role in transforming an ordinary designer into an extraordinary craftsman. After all, it is motivation that gets them started and good habits that keeps them going.
